Description

The Isleworth War Memorial is a war memorial designed in the form of a clock tower, built in 1922 by architect A. P. Green and constructed by Keates and Company of Hampton. It honors the 386 men from Isleworth who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial features a 29-foot high tower made of Clipsham stone, with York stone steps and Portland stone panels.

The tower has a slightly battered design and is set on a square base with two steps, measuring 10 feet and 11 feet square. It is topped with an ornamented stone cross. The chamfered plinth on the main (south) face includes an inscription that notes the memorial was erected by public subscription and unveiled on June 22, 1922.

The tall base has an entrance on the north elevation, which features an eight-panelled oak door framed by a plain architrave with chamfered reveals, providing access to the clock mechanism. Each of the other elevations has a Portland stone panel displaying the names of the fallen soldiers. An entablature with a deep cornice and a frieze inscribed with "Isleworth Remembrance" in Gothic lettering, along with the dates 1914 - 1918 on the south face, adds to the memorial's significance.

The battered tower is incised at the angles, with a clock face set in a reeded bull's eye on each elevation. On the south elevation, there is a depiction of a Crusader's sword and wreath. The structure features a deep moulded cornice and a stone cross. The clock was supplied by Messrs. Gillett and Johnston of Croydon. Additionally, there is a memorial slab dedicated to those who died in the Second World War, located against the south steps.
