Description

787/0/10146 ST DUNSTAN'S ROAD 31-OCT-02 Lower Feltham Chest Tomb to Dan Blake, St Dunstan's Churchyard

GV II

Chest tomb to Daniel Blake d.1796. Portland stone. Angle pilasters enriched with vermiculated quoins. The inscription, on the south side, includes a quotation from the Book of Job: 'O that Thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time and remember me' (Job XIV, 18). The chest is an elegant Neoclassical example *rather overgrown with ivy at the time of inspection), while the biblical quotation is remarkable as a reflection of Blake's concern for his own salvation.
