Description
The chest tomb to Daniel Blake, who died in 1796, is located in the churchyard of St Dunstan's Church. It is made of Portland stone and features angle pilasters with vermiculated quoins. On the south side, there is an inscription that includes a quotation from the Book of Job: "O that Thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time and remember me" (Job XIV, 18). This chest tomb is an elegant example of Neoclassical design, although it was somewhat overgrown with ivy at the time of inspection. The biblical quotation is notable as it reflects Blake's concern for his own salvation.
