Description
Breakspear House is a large house from the early to mid-17th century, although it has some external features that appear to be from the late 17th century. The building is made of red brick with a pattern of blue headers and has some patches in places. It has two storeys and an attic, with a total of 13 windows. There is an early 20th-century left extension that is set back, and a blank 19th-century extension on the right. The high-pitched tiled roof features seven hipped dormers that are irregularly spaced, along with four panelled brick ridge stacks. The eaves cornice is moulded and has modillions. There is a stone band on the second floor, and the windows have gauged flat brick arches with mullions and transoms, many of which have old leaded iron casements. The first and eighth bays are two-storey canted bays with five lights. In the fourth bay from the left, there is a 19th-century six-panel door within a stucco entablature surround. Inside, the hall and dining room are adorned with complete panelling and impressive carved chimney pieces in a robust artisan mannerist style.
