Description

Brackenbury Farm is a 16th-century brick building that was expanded in the early to mid-17th century with a substantial timber-framed house, now known as Brackenbury House. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring four irregular bays. The walls are currently pebbledashed, and the half-hipped tiled roof has two original ridge stacks that are tall, square, and have segment-headed panels. The windows are mullioned and transomed casements, and there is a modillioned eaves cornice. A later lean-to is located on the right side.

Inside, there are very stout timbers visible, including some of the side-purlin roof with wind braces and ashlared rafters. The good staircase leading to the attic has stout turned balusters, a square section handrail, and a closed moulded string. The inglenook fireplace has been altered but remains open, and there are two original bolection-moulded stone fireplace surrounds.

The rear view of Brackenbury House shows four wide bays, mostly featuring 18th or 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars, although there are two modern windows and a canted modern bay that also have matching glazing bars. Brackenbury Farm, which is two storeys high, has two windows made of old brick and an enormous end chimney with crow-stepped offsets and paired diagonal shafts. On the inner return, there are two windows and a modern dormer that breaks the eaves. The old tiled roof is complemented by modern extensions on the south side, which include leaded casements and a six-panel door. Inside, there is a splendid inglenook and heavy beams.
