Description

House, built between 1933 and 1934 by Francis Skinner and Tecton for Pell and Clayton Ltd. The building is of reinforced concrete, painted with some board marking, and has a flat roof. It is arranged in an 'L' shape, with the main rooms facing the garden. A roof terrace is located on the garden elevation. The north-eastern front elevation is relatively simple, with the first floor largely blind except for an opening leading to the terrace. At ground floor level, there is an entrance door under a porch, with metal windows and ventilators installed in 2002 to either side. The original entrance porch has since been infilled with a late 20th-century door. Staircase windows and a horizontal strip providing light to the principal bathroom complete the external fenestration. All the principal windows face into the garden, creating a very private design. The original steel windows remain, along with steel balustrades for the external staircase and balconies. Large south-facing windows have opening casements and toplights to the living room, and casements to the bedrooms. A door provides access to the garden. An additional room, sympathetically added on part of the terrace, does not alter the appearance of the building from the street. A truncated terrace is accessed by an external staircase with a steel balustrade from the garden. Inside, the original staircase is retained, featuring a moulded concrete balustrade and steel handrail. Tecton, a pioneering firm of modern architects established by Berthold Lubetkin, designed this property, which was a prize-winning entry in the Gidea Park Modern Homes Exhibition in 1934. It is considered a sophisticated and intelligent design, providing a high level of privacy and natural light.
