Description

Nos 53, 53A, and 55 are a group of villas dating to around 1830, with a later addition. No. 53 is a three-storey villa with a basement and three windows. It has a low-pitched, hipped slate roof with an eaves soffit. The front is stuccoed over painted brickwork. The sash windows have glazing bars, some of which have been replaced; those on the ground floor are set within square-headed recesses. A wrought-iron handrail leads to a prostyle Doric porch with fluted columns and pilasters. The front door has been renewed. A basement window has been enlarged to the left. No. 53A is a two-storey, five-window extension that occupies the space between Nos 53 and 55, connecting to both. The stuccoed front has a parapet. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor features a small oriel window and a large, rounded bay window of early 19th century style, likely imported. A grand, imported 18th-century Doric prostyle porch, with fluted columns and pilasters, a triglyph and paterae frieze, an open pediment with a mutule cornice, and a panelled soffit, has been incorporated. The porch contains a door of six fielded panels, an enriched cornice head, and a modern radial fanlight, set within a panelled reveal with a continuous cornice and moulded architrave with a keystone. No. 55 is a two-storey villa with a basement and three windows. It has a moderately low-pitched, hipped slate roof with paired brackets to the eaves soffit. The front is stuccoed, overlying multicoloured stock brickwork. The sash windows have glazing bars. A prostyle Doric porch with fluted columns and pilasters leads to a door consisting of two flat panels and four fielded panels. A single-storey garage extension is attached to the right.
