Description
This is a row of three early to mid-19th century villas, located at numbers 4, 6, and 8 Pond Road. They were originally three detached houses. All three have two storeys and a basement, with low-pitched, hipped slate roofs featuring an eaves soffit. The frontages are rendered with stucco, set against a background of multicoloured stock brick.
Number 4 has moulded architraves to its sash windows, which retain glazing bars. A five-step approach leads to a prostyle Ionic porch with fluted columns. The front door is four-panelled, with the upper two panels glazed, topped by a cornice and a decorative rectangular fanlight. A garage extension is visible to the left. A plaque commemorates that the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) stayed at this address in 1856.
Numbers 6 and 8 are similar in style. Number 6 has a six-panel door, four of the panels glazed, and a raised attic in the centre with a single sash window. Number 8 has plain reveals to most of its sash windows (many of which have been replaced) and keystones to the first-floor windows. The ground-floor windows are situated in projecting straight bays with swept lead roofs. There is a wooden trellis porch with reeded columns, mirroring the roof design.
Numbers 4 to 12 (even) form a cohesive group.
