Description

This is a terrace of houses built between 1832 and 1836. Numbers 3-13 were completed in 1836, numbers 15 and 17 in 1835, numbers 19 and 21 in 1834, and numbers 23-27 in 1832. The houses are constructed of stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a slate roof and chimney stacks built of brick. The rear elevations are stuccoed with grooved lines intended to mimic stonework, and the ground floors of numbers 3 and 5 are also stuccoed. Each house has two storeys and two windows. They feature 12-pane sashes with cambered architraves and rubbed brick voussoirs, with the ground-floor windows being larger. The left side has wooden doorcases with brackets, reeded pilasters, rectangular fanlights, and six-panelled doors. Numbers 5 and 7 have paired doorcases. Number 7 has a mid-19th century sash window with verticals only and horns, and number 27 has mid-19th century cornices and console brackets to its two ground-floor windows, as well as a doorcase in the side elevation with a pilaster and cornice. The rear elevations include gabled, slate-roofed extensions. Interior features reported to include chimney pieces with reeded surrounds and mantels, and contemporary staircases. The group value of this terrace lies in its cohesive architectural style and historical significance as part of King George Street.
