Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, numbered 32 to 40 Maze Hill, formed from the former Infirmary of a Naval Asylum School. The building dates to the late 18th century. It presents a long, two-storey facade with fifteen windows, and the ends are stepped to accommodate the rising hill. The roof is moderately pitched and slated, with a bracketed eaves soffit. The facade is constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with gauged, flat brick arches and stone cills to recessed sash windows, most of which have been fitted with replacement glazing bars. The two leftmost windows of number 40 are blanked. Number 34 contains a curved stone staircase with square iron balusters, slightly bowed in the lower section, and an octagonal well with a domed ceiling. Number 38 has a similar staircase within an octagonal well, with longer sides creating an oval effect, also featuring a domed ceiling.
