Description
This is a pair of tall houses, numbers 53 and 55 Maze Hill, built around 1830 in a Tudor style. They are set back from the road, with a two-storey, single-window extension to the left of number 53 and a flush, battlemented extension to the right of number 55. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and originally contained two windows. The houses have steep, high-pitched slate roofs with a steep gable rising from a battlemented parapet. They are constructed of red brick with a decorative pattern of black headers. They feature tall brick chimney stacks with cornices in several planes. Stone bands run horizontally between floors. The windows are casement windows, some with one light and others with two, set within brick reveals that have been chamfered. Stone drip moulds are above the larger first-floor windows. The doorways are topped by square drip moulds, raised in the centre, with a shield in the label. Above the Tudor-arched door, which has a reeded cornice, a fanlight and side lights, are patterned spandrels. There are four stone steps leading to the front door, and cast iron area railings with a heart-shaped design. A small door is set within the right extension of number 55.
