Description
The Charlton Village War Memorial is located on a triangular island at the junction of three roads, near the Church of St Luke and its associated churchyard walls, gate piers, and gate. It is positioned on a paved platform edged with bricks, featuring a flower bed on one side and pedestrian pavements on the other two sides. The base of the memorial is surrounded by an octagonal brick pavement. On the west side, a drinking trough serves as a planter, while a drinking fountain from 1902 is situated to the south.
Standing at 6.1 meters tall, the memorial is designed in the style of the Commonwealth War Graves Cross of Sacrifice, created by Sir Reginald Blomfield. However, it has distinct differences in the design of the cross shaft foot, the plinth, and the base. The cross features a bronze sword of sacrifice on the front face of the octagonal shaft. The octagonal plinth rests on a two-stepped, octagonal base.
Around the plinth are seven stone tablets inscribed with names, and on the front face, there is a bronze plaque with raised lettering. This plaque bears the dedicatory inscription: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CHARLTON WHO IN THE GREAT WARS 1914 AND 1939 GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT WE MIGHT LIVE. THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED IN THE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE IN ST LUKE’S CHURCH." Additionally, two horizontal inscribed stone tablets on the step below the plinth list the names of three servicemen who died during the Second World War.
