Description
Charlton House is a large Jacobean mansion located on Charlton Road, built in 1612 for Sir Adam Newton, with additions made in 1659 for Sir William Ducie. The mansion features an H-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall, constructed of red brick with stone dressings and stone bands at the floor levels, along with mullion windows. The west front is adorned with a pierced stone parapet, and at its center is a brick and stone projection that includes a richly ornamented porch and two bay windows above, connected by two-window links to the projecting wings of three-storey bays. The east front has a similar outline to the west but is less ornamental. Both the north and south elevations consist of three storeys with seven windows and feature square central towers that rise five storeys, topped with stone corbelled cornices and ogee slated roofs, with the south tower housing a clock. The west front is complemented by a pierced stone terrace wall that returns along the sides. The mansion also has octagonal brick chimney stacks arranged in groups of three and five, each with moulded caps and bases. Inside, the mansion retains contemporary staircases, panelled rooms, ornamental ceilings, and chimney pieces. It currently serves as a community centre.
