Description
This is a row of four pairs of houses, numbers 199 to 213 Greenwich High Road, built between 1815 and 1820. They were designed by Jesse Gibson, who was the architect for the Drapers' Company. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with some patching, and the sides are rendered. They have slate roofs and central chimney stacks. The pairs are joined as a terrace by projecting porches and garden doors on each side, though the porches and garden doors to number 209 have been removed to create a driveway to the rear. Each house has a symmetrical design with two bays. A rendered sill band runs along the first floor. The windows are mostly glazing bar sashes, although those at number 201 and the ground floor of number 213 have been altered with the installation of plate glass. Original fanlights remain over the entrances to numbers 199, 205, 211 and 213, along with panelled doors to numbers 199, 203, 205, 211 and 213. The door at number 213 has been modified with the addition of glazing. The buildings demonstrate group value through their cohesive terrace design and represent a significant example of early 19th-century residential architecture in Greenwich.
