Description
The gates, gate piers, and railings to the forecourt west of Trafalgar Quarters date from the 19th century and are made of wrought iron. There are five gates in total: two small single gates leading to the North and South lodges, two large double gates providing access to the drives on either side of the main building, and a large central double gate. The square wrought-iron piers feature pineapple finials. The railings, which are set on a low stone plinth, connect all the gates and consist of closely spaced, alternating tall and short standards. The tall standards have plain spikes, while the short ones are topped with linked arrowheads. The gates follow a similar design, with a row of circles bearing spikes above the lower range of standards. Additionally, there are four wrought iron lamp holders, positioned at either side of the central gate and on the inner side of each outer double gate.
