Description
The Royal Dockyard Clock House, facing the entrance, is an early to mid-18th century building that has undergone some alterations. It features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a total of seven windows. The building has a high-pitched, hipped slate roof and four square dormers. At the center, there is a square clock tower made of stucco, which has a plinth, quoins, and a moulded cornice that curves up in the center to accommodate four large clock faces. Above the clock tower, there is an octagonal open cupola with round arches on alternate sides, topped with a leaded dome and a vane.
The exterior is constructed from multicoloured stock brick, with a brick and stone cornice and a stone-coped brick parapet. The three central bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment that features a blocked round window. There is a band on the first floor and a plinth at the basement level. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set beneath gauged, flat yellow brick arches, although many have been replaced or blocked.
A flight of steps from the center, dating from the early to mid-19th century, forks to lead to two enclosed wooden porches, one on either side of the central section. These porches have round-arched sash windows with glazing bars in moulded architraves on the fronts, and doors beneath radial fanlights on the inner returns. The returns have six bays styled similarly to the front, while the rear elevation also features a pediment but is affected by later additions and plumbing work.
