Description
The chimney to the steam factory at the former Royal Dockyard was constructed following funding approved in 1837 and is shown on the 1843 plan of the steam factory, which was next to the boiler shop that was demolished in 1982. This octagonal chimney stands 180 feet tall and is made of stock brick, featuring a panelled base and a moulded stone cornice. Later additions include a network of bracing straps. There are also reports of underground tunnels that connect the chimney to the River Thames.
