Description
The forecourt railings and gates to the Red Barracks, along with the gate lodge, date from the 19th century. The high railings are made of cast iron and feature spiked cross bands at the center and base, with a plain cross band at the top. Column standards with ball finials are positioned at intervals. The railings are supported by rusticated grey brick piers that have a stone entablature and blocking course. This structure rests on a heavy stone coping of a retaining wall made from multicoloured stock brick.
To the right, there is a section of red brick that includes a single round arched door, which leads to a pair of heavy sandstone piers adorned with entablature pediments and ornamental front panels. These piers support double doors that have pierced panels. Another section of red brick leads to the end wall of the one-storey lodge. The lodge features red brick with a frieze and rusticated quoins made of grey brick, a stone cornice and pediment, and a stone-coped plinth. Additionally, there is a round-headed niche with a stone cill.
