Description
The Cambridge Barracks entrance, built in 1847, features a tall central block that is the height of three tall storeys, flanked by side wings that are one tall storey high. The central block is made of banded, rusticated stone and has paired, rusticated pilasters on either side of a round-arched carriage entrance, which is adorned with rusticated voussoirs. The pilasters support an entablature and a blocking course. The one-storey side wings are constructed of plain ashlar and have small round-arched pedestrian entrances with rusticated voussoirs and jambs.
From these wings, quadrant links made of plain ashlar with rusticated quoins connect to two-storey side blocks, which are built of greyish-yellow stock brick and feature a stone plinth, quoins, an entablature, and a blocking course, but are otherwise blank. The entrance is complemented by simple double and single cast iron gates, and there is a wrought iron lamp holder in an overthrow under the main arch. The side blocks include Doric loggias on their inner returns. Inside, the facade is made of stock brick and features a large clock in the central cresting wall, with each side block having three windows.
