Description
Wright's Almshouses, built in 1847, is a symmetrical row of cottages located at 4411 Hertford Road. Each cottage is two storeys high and features one window, with blank panels above the doors. The four central bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment. The building has a fairly low pitched slated roof and is constructed of stock brick with red brick quoins. The window dressings and diagonal brick cornice are part of the pediment design. Doors and recessed sash windows, which have glazing bars and stone sills, are adorned with gauged flat brick arches. Each cottage has a four-panel door that is sheltered by heavy stone cornice hoods supported by carved scrolled brackets, reflecting a 17th-century style. A stone tablet in a moulded brick frame in the pediment reads: "These almshouses were erected, and endowed by Mr Charles Wright of Enfield Highway for the support of 6 poor women. AD 1847."
