Description

No. 23, St Mary's Road is a detached house dating from the 1830s, with alterations made around 1870. The house is constructed of yellow stock brick with rendered bands, and has a slated hipped roof with brick stacks. It is two storeys high with a basement, and features three windows, plus a single-window, slightly recessed extension to the left. A good Doric porch with panelled door and overlight is set within a slightly recessed central bay. The flanking bays have ground floor canted bay windows with projecting cornices, added around 1870, and a continuous band at the impost level. The first floor windows are six-pane sashes with a continuous sill band. Internally, original marble chimney pieces with bracketed mantles and grates remain, along with a kitchen range and an open string staircase with stick balusters. There is also good plasterwork from around 1870, including filigree cornices and a rose.
