Description

The Church of St Mary is a Romanesque style church constructed between 1866 and 1873, designed by S S Teulon. It is a robust building that commands a wide road junction. The church is built of brick and stone with tiled roofs. According to Thorne, the visible structure incorporates the fabric of an earlier church dating back to 1739. The interior is austere, featuring galleries on three sides. The open timber roof is supported by iron columns. Several 18th and 19th century wall tablets have been retained, along with a brass dating from around 1490.
