Description

Chemist's shop with accommodation over, now a separate flat. Dated 1902, with the shop re-ordered around 1924. The building is constructed of brownish brick with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with crested ridge tiles. It comprises three storeys in a single bay.

The shop front dates from around 1924 and is set within the original surround. It features a recessed central door with an overlight and tessellated pavement in front, flanked by bow-cornered windows with black marble plinths, slender columns with bulbous bases and capitals, and transoms. A continuous overlight runs across. Both the door and overlights have glazing bars forming lozenges. The surround has red marble pilasters on plinths supporting short paired columns with plain capitals; console brackets flank the fascia and support the cornice.

Above the shop front rises a two-storey canted bay window with transomed 4-light windows fitted with wooden casements and small-pane upper lights. The bay is decorated with cornices, a date panel between the windows, and a coat of arms breaking through the parapet above. The façade is articulated by a first-floor band, an eaves band, and a string running below the coped parapet. A chimney rises on the right side.

The interior retains good-quality shop fittings from both the original period and the circa 1924 re-ordering. When the shop was reorganised, the rear parlour was brought into the shop space and the shop side-wall units were extended rearwards. The counter display cupboard, originally positioned on the right side, was relocated to the left side. The fittings include two original counter cupboards; the longer front range has a raked counter display unit and an upper cupboard on the left side with decorative frieze and pediment. A third similar range runs along the rear wall. The side walls are lined with cupboards and shelves, including a unit on the left side with labelled glass-handled drawers, mirrors, and a clock in an elaborate decorative surround. All units are of mahogany and feature decorative spandrels, fluted pilasters, console brackets, broken pediments, and urn finials. Between the front and rear sections of the shop stands a 3-bay screen with tapering fluted square columns supporting a central segmental arch and flanking round arches, with an open frieze of burned balusters. The shop has a moulded cornice and boarded ceiling.

The building is of special interest because of the quality and completeness of its shop fittings and shop front.
