Description

Pitzhanger Manor House, located on Mattock Lane in Ealing, is a Grade I listed building. The south wing was designed by George Dance the Younger in 1770, while the remainder of the house was completed by Sir John Soane in 1802. The plain wing contains a dining room and billiard room, both styled in the Adam tradition. The central block is two storeys high and features three bays with a grand detached Ionic order made of Portland stone, along with statues above. The ground storey has round-headed double-hung sash windows, and there is a central entrance door with a fanlight and radiating bars. The attic is windowless, with roundels on either side and a square centre panel, topped with a Portland stone balustrade. To the right, there is a two-storey, one-bay wing, and a single-storey wing that projects further right, featuring Ionic pilasters and a dentil cornice.

This house served as Soane's own country residence from 1801 to 1811, making it historically significant. The main interiors include the entrance hall, staircase, parlour, and breakfast room, with the latter two remaining largely unaltered. The garden front is also noteworthy, displaying three bays with incised patterned stone pilasters, a 'Chinese' balcony screen, and a balustraded parapet.
