Description

The Parish Church of the Holy Cross, also known as the Old Church, is likely from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with the chancel rebuilt in the 17th century. The chancel arch was added in 1871, and the chancel was refaced during a restoration in 1882. The belfry was rebuilt in 1913. The church features an aisleless nave and chancel made of flint rubble, with Reigate and other freestone dressings. At the west end, there is a timber-framed and weatherboarded structure that supports the tower, probably dating from around 1500. The roofs are pitched and tiled. The chancel has early 17th-century windows in the south wall, while the nave contains four modern windows. A late 15th-century south doorway is complemented by an early 16th-century timber-frame porch on dwarf walls. The chancel roof is of the 15th-century king-post type. A west annexe, also from around 1500, is timber-framed with six main posts, although the intermediate posts on the east are modern. Curved braces support the cross-beams. The church houses bells from the 14th century, 1510, and 1699, as well as a font from 1638 with a contemporary oak cover. The west gallery features a front with turned posts and balusters, along with a similar staircase, both dating to the late 17th century. There is a notable collection of early 16th-century stained glass, some believed to be from King's College, Cambridge, along with 15th and 16th-century brasses and a series of monuments and floor slabs from the 17th and early 18th centuries.
