Description
The Hanwell Community Centre, built in 1856, is the administration block of the former London District Schools, with the rest of the complex demolished around 1890. The building features a central block that is three stories high and has seven bay wings, along with a ten bay single storey rear wing that is set at right angles to the front block. A clock tower is positioned over the junction of the front and rear blocks. Constructed from yellow stock brick with stucco dressings, the front central block has an arcade supported by foliage capitals and bulbous columns. There are band courses below, above, and at the abacus level on the first floor. The first floor windows, set in the arcade, have paired arched lights with roundels in the spandrels, and there are oculi above the spandrels. The second floor features semi-circular windows, and there is a bracketed cornice at the top. The wings have segmental-headed sash windows on the ground floor and round-headed windows on the first and second floors. The clock tower includes blind arches below the clock faces and an arched belfry above, topped with obelisk finials. The building is prominently situated.
