Description

The Church of St Barnabas is an Anglican church designed between 1935 and 1939, with construction completed in 1954, by architect J Harold Gibbons. It is built of brick in English bond with artificial stone dressings, concrete, and tile roofs. The church features a chancel and nave that are continuous, consisting of eight round-arched bays. The bay at the ritual west end is notably high to emphasize the entrance axis, followed by four smaller bays and flat-roofed north and south aisles. There are three broad round arches indicating a vestigial transept, which is expressed by facing gables on the exterior, along with the choir. A polygonal baptistery with a stone font is located at the west end, and there is a gambrel-roofed porch at the southwest, topped by a slender bell cote or tower.

Inside, the continuous arcade is significant for organizing the liturgical plan, with secondary features like the stair to the east end of the north aisle clearly subordinate to it. The variety of roof forms is also notable, including transverse barrel vaults over the high bays at the entrance, a cambered vault over the nave and chancel, coffered aisle ceilings made from cast concrete, and a pair of shallow transverse barrel vaults in the eastmost bays of the south aisle. The organ loft is accessible by stairs beneath the arcade. The interior includes a carved rood with a cross shaped like an anchor and electric light fixtures of original design. There are two-storey ancillary rooms at the ritual northeast. The interior surfaces are made of concrete, painted in the original colour scheme on the roof and at points of emphasis, while remaining unpainted elsewhere. A statue of Christ is positioned over the south portal.

The church's design, while emphasizing formal play and pure geometries, also carries a sense of medieval influence. Noteworthy interior features include the stone font.
