Description
Sudbury Hill London Regional Transport Underground Station and generating station is a London Underground station built in 1931 by Charles Holden, with on-site supervision by Stanley Heaps. The structure features red brick and reinforced concrete, with flat concrete roof slabs. It has a curved forecourt wall with an open impaled roundel leading to a symmetrical single-storey entrance flanked by kiosks. Behind the entrance, there is a square double-height ticket hall adjacent to the tracks. A concrete bridge connects to stairs that descend under stepped enclosures to covered shelters on either side, which are set back from the platform and include fixed seating behind glazed screens. The integral platform walls have roundels outlined in black, with two additional roundels in stepped concrete slabs that incorporate poster boards. The 'up' platform houses a rectangular generating station that is unfenestrated, showcasing Holden's use of unadorned brickwork topped with a concrete slab, which contrasts with the glazed box of the station. All windows are metal casements with horizontal glazing bars, except for the shop fronts, which are also original. The station sign reads 'Sudbury Hill Station' in separate Johnston Sans letters. The ticket hall features a full-height glazed three-bay panel as a centerpiece on each facade, with the road-facing side displaying a colored logo and the legend 'UndergrounD'. Inside, the ticket hall retains a fixed bench and a telephone area under the original sign, with exposed concrete lintels in the ceiling and original tiling on the floor. This station is notable as the second to be completed on the Sudbury Town model, representing a refinement of the prototype and is in remarkably good condition.
