Description

St Margaret's is a substantial detached house built in 1895 by Arnold Mitchell. It is constructed of red brick with tile hanging, and has a pitched tiled roof extending to the eaves. The house is two storeys high with dormers, and is eight bays wide, with the outer two bays projecting forward to form gabled wings, each featuring a canted two-storey bay window. A central, projecting porch has solid sides, supported by Doric columns on pedestals and a richly decorated dentil cornice that extends above the ground-floor windows. The upper floor is tile-hung. The central bays have cross-mullioned windows with leaded lights on the ground floor. Other windows are flush-framed casements with small panes and glazing bars. A rich modillion eaves cornice is found on the recessed central bays, while other areas have deep eaves. The rear elevation is also noteworthy, featuring tall staircase windows. Inside, original woodwork, an original inglenook, fireplaces, paired staircases, and other original features are retained.
