Description
The Elms is a building dating from around 1720, located on Uxbridge Road in W3. It is constructed of brown brick with red dressings and stands two storeys high with an attic. The façade features five double-hung sash windows set within architraves, complete with sills, segmental arches, and keystones. A basement plinth is present, and there are six stone steps leading up to the entrance door, which consists of four triangular and six rectangular fielded panels, framed by a rusticated door surround.
The entrance is flanked by four two-storey Roman Doric pilasters on plinths, topped with an entablature that includes a pulvinated frieze and a pediment featuring elliptical arched windows. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and includes two segmental-headed dormers. To the left, there is a one-storey late 18th-century wing with three dummy segmental-arched windows, while the right side features a late 18th-century two-storey office wing with an arcaded ground floor consisting of six segmental arches.
On the north elevation, there is a ground floor window with an architrave, consoles, and a segmental hood, along with a door that has elaborate carved consoles and a large hood with a soffit of six small fielded panels. Inside, the building contains many panelled rooms, some with original unpretentious fireplaces, fine turned balusters, and carved spandrels on the cut string staircase. The late 18th-century drawing room showcases excellent plaster walls and a plaster and painted ceiling in the Adam style.
