Description

Gates, gate piers, and railings to the rear of numbers 13 and 15 on Newburgh Road date from the early 18th century and were originally part of the former Derwentwater House. The structure features two stock brick piers topped with stone capping and ball finials. There are eight bays of wrought iron railings, approximately 10 feet high, with the center two bays functioning as gates. The top rail is adorned with urn finials that mark the bays. It is said that the gates have remained unopened since the decapitated body of Lord Derwentwater was secretly smuggled into the house after his execution on Tower Hill for his involvement in the 1715 rebellion.
