Description
The Way Monument, located approximately 7 metres south of the south chapel of the Church of St Mary, is a memorial built around 1816 to commemorate John and Mary Way, who died in 1804 and 1816, respectively. Designed by John Bacon the Younger, the monument features a brick base and an ashlar structure. It sits on a four-step podium, with a funerary urn placed within a semi-circular vault, giving it the appearance of a pierced chest tomb. The sides have spandrels adorned with scrolled acanthus decoration, and there are well-lettered commemorative inscriptions on the ends, although the inscription at the west end is worn. Atop the monument is an obelisk that stands on a covered base, which includes a coat of arms and a worn inscription on the north side.
