Description
A block of flats was built in 1934 by R Toms and Partners for the Bell Property Company. The building is constructed of brick with white and red dressings, and has a green tile roof and painted brick chimneys. It rises three storeys with an attic, and is arranged with 17 bays. The main entrances each have a single glazed pane set in a wooden frame with decorative glazing bars. The windows are small-paned metal Crittal windows with tile sills, and include French windows. The attic has flat-roofed dormers, with some being canted and featuring decorative central metal panels when paired. Three entrance and stair towers are evenly spaced, and include curvilinear gables and decorative brick panels connecting the door surrounds to the windows above; the attic window in these towers is narrower and round arched. Full-height canted bay windows are located at the ends of the building and between the towers. These bays are linked to the towers by balconies featuring decorative openwork panels of semi-circular tiles. The roof has steeply pitched, hipped sides and a flat top. The rear elevation retains its original window arrangement, and includes metal fire escapes with partially glazed doors. The interior has not been fully inspected, but some flats retain original features. The building is one of five similar blocks.
