Description

Coombe House, now St Margaret’s School, was likely built after 1761 when purchased by James Bourdieu. It is a substantial red brick house of two storeys. The front facing the road has three sash windows, with the centre window recessed between projecting wings, each having a two-storeyed brick bay. The garden front also has three windows. A Portland stone balustraded parapet tops the garden front. The house features a projecting centre with an open pedimented Doric porch, incorporating a triglyph frieze. A painted modillion cornice runs along the top of the house, above which is a plain parapet with a central pediment. The windows are sash windows, some with blind boxes. Evidence suggests that cellars from an earlier building are still present.
