Description
The former Grant's Department Store, built in 1894 by Metcalfe and Jones for Grant Brothers, is a notable four-storey building with attics located on the west side of Croydon High Street. It features a red brick construction with grey brick diapering and extensive stone dressings. The facade is symmetrical with seven bays. The ground floor has a modern shop front that obscures the fascia, and semi-octagonal attached columns at the ends and on either side of the central bay. Similar columns define the other bays but project from corbels.
On the first floor, there are three pairs of windows with four-centred arches beneath flat stone entablatures, flanking two narrow central windows that feature a decorative panel with the initials 'GB'. Above this, decorative lettering reads: 'MILLINERY/RIBBONS - LONDON HOUSE - LACE/GLOVES - SILKS/DRESSES - LONDON HOUSE - MANTLES/LINENS'. The bays above these windows are arranged in a 1-2-1 pattern on either side of a projecting canted oriel, all adorned with stone dressings.
The cornice above the third floor is decorated with leaves and panels. The central oriel is topped with a turret featuring an ogee cap and octagonal pillars that project above the parapet, supporting heraldic beasts. A further tower rises one storey higher at the back, complete with an open decorated parapet.
