Description

The Municipal Buildings, constructed between 1892 and 1896 by Charles Henman Jnr, consist of a clock tower, a public library, and a Corn Exchange, all designed in red brick with stone ornamentation and topped with a slate roof. The complex features buildings of varying sizes. The town hall, which has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, is nine bays wide facing Katharine Street and five bays wide facing Fell Street, with a tall clock tower on the southwest corner. Adjacent to the town hall is the library, which has one storey, an attic, and a basement, characterized by a steeply pitched roof and a central turret. To the northwest is the Corn Exchange, a three-storey structure with four bays and a two-bay loggia above part of the external staircase. In front of both the town hall and the library is a stone area balustrade that includes a war memorial located before the western end of the town hall and a bronze statue of Queen Victoria positioned opposite the central bay of the library.
