Description

Nat West Bank, located at 45 High Street, consists of two structures of different dates that are now used together. The main part of the building, No 45A, serves as a separate office on the upper floors of Nos 43 and 45. Nos 39 and 41 were built in 1893 and are designed in a Classical style. They are three storeys tall with a basement and feature three bays. The facades are made of red brick, accented by a row of Giant Corinthian pilasters, an entablature, and a parapet. The ground floor is faced in ashlar stone with a distinct design. The windows on the first and second floors are sash windows with moulded ashlar architraves, and there is panelling between the floors. The first-floor windows have cornices, and large windows on the ground floor are separated by demi-columns. The centre of the seven-bay return front to Katherine Street has a pedimented panel displaying the letters 'BUL 1893' in the parapet. There is a segmental pediment on the first floor and a columned entrance to the bank below. Nos 43, 45, and 45A date from the mid-19th century and are also three storeys tall with two bays. They are constructed of brick and feature a stucco cornice and blocking course, along with a frieze band of guilloche moulding below and stucco quoins. The sash windows have moulded stucco shouldered architraves and cornices, with the first-floor architraves adorned with wheat-ear drops on either side. The ground floor has a modern plate-glass bank front.
