Description
A pair of cottages built in 1886 by George Devey for Everard Alexander Hambro, possibly completed later by James Williams. The cottages are constructed of brick, with diaper detailing, roughcast, and timber cladding to the first floor, along with tile hanging to the gable and a tiled roof. Their asymmetrical design incorporates a projecting, jettied bay and a jettied first floor in a Wealden style in the left-hand cottage (No. 21), and a large external stack against the gable and a larger projecting bay to the rear in the right-hand cottage (No. 23). Most windows are leaded casements, mostly of three lights, with one four-light and one Venetian window in No. 21 and a canted first-floor oriel in No. 23. The central door is to No. 21, with the entrance to No. 23 on the side. No. 21 features first-floor half-timbering with a dentiled cornice, and both cottages have network bargeboards. The property is notable as an exemplar of George Devey's work.
