Description
The Church of St Mary, located on Hayes Street in Hayes, is a Grade II listed building. It features knapped flint with stone dressings and includes a chancel, nave with aisles, vestry, and a west tower. The lower part of the tower and the west wall of the nave, which has a lancet window, date from around 1200. The mullions of the windows in the south aisle and the vestry are from approximately 1350. However, the church underwent significant rebuilding in the 19th century, with the north aisle completed by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1856, the south aisle and vestry by J Oldrid Scott in 1879, and the chancel by Sir Thomas Jackson in 1905. The south porch was added in 1965. Inside, the nave features an old ashlared crown post rafter roof, while the north and south aisles have crew post, scissor, and rafter roofs. The interior also contains a modern monument to the Earl of Chatham and William Pitt the Younger.
