Description

A row of ten cottages built between 1886 and 1888 by George Devey for Everard Alexander Hambro, with supervision and completion by James Williams. The cottages are constructed of brick in a rat-trap bond, with roughcast to the first floor and tile hanging to the sides and rear. They have tiled roofs. The cottages are arranged over two storeys, each being one bay wide and typically set in pairs, with paired front doors and rear wings; the end cottages project forward. The first floor is jettied over the canted ground-floor bay windows. Prominent stacks are positioned on the cross-walls and at the ends of the row. The street facade exhibits a symmetrical design. All first-floor windows are timber casements with leaded lights, each of three lights and set on small wooden brackets; those on the end cottages have pediments. The ground floor features four-light canted windows. The front doors are panelled with two leaded lights, with some replacements and the door to number 12 having been moved. The rear windows are also casement windows with leaded lights, some with arched brick heads and some renewed. The cottages are notable as an example of George Devey adopting a formal architectural composition.
