Description
Nos 25 and 27 Halfway Street is a building that likely dates from the 15th or early 16th century. Originally constructed as a single house, it has undergone significant restoration and alteration. The building is two storeys high and features four windows with modern casements. The exterior is whitewashed roughcast infilling between timber framing. There is an additional bay to the east and an outshot at the rear. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles, topped by a four-flue chimney stack.
Originally, the structure consisted of three bays: the central bay was a hall open to the roof, the eastern bay served as the service end, and the western bay was the solar. Much of the original roof construction remains intact, including tie-beams, crown-posts, a collar-plate, and collars that support pairs of rafters. Inside, parts of original doorways and wattle-and-daub partitions can still be seen. Extensive additions were made to the building in 1924-1925.
