Description
The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, located on Church Avenue in Sidcup, was built between 1882 and 1901 by architect G E Fellowes Prynne, replacing a church from 1841. The church features a six-bay aisled nave, a four-bay aisled chancel, and two-bay chapels on the north and south sides. It includes a south-west tower, which is unfinished above the bell stage, a north-west baptistery, vestries, and an organ chamber to the north of the chancel. The building is constructed of yellow brick, enhanced with red brick bands and surrounds, as well as stone bands, and has a red tile roof. The windows are lancets. Inside, the church has a two-storey layout with a quatrefoil balustrade below the clerestory and a wooden pointed tunnel vault supported by coved hammer-beams. A triple arcaded screen spans the chancel arch, featuring a pierced crenellated parapet. The chancel boasts a pointed wagon roof, and there is a Flemish pulpit inscribed "Antwerp 1651".
