Description
The tomb of Henry Joynes, who died in 1754, is located in St Mary's Churchyard in Hendon. It is made of Portland stone and features a two-stage pedestal that once had an urn or similar finial on top. The inscription on the south side of the tomb states that Joynes was "Comptroller and Conductor of the Building of Blenheim House in Oxfordshire from 1706 to 1715" and that he served for many years as the Surveyor of the Sewers of Westminster. Joynes was an architect, known for his work as an assistant to Nicholas Hawksmoor, and he was responsible for the design of this monument.
