Description
The tomb of Sir Joseph Ayloffe, who died in 1781, is located in St Mary's Churchyard in Hendon. It features a chest made of Portland stone topped with a ledger of Pennant stone. The side and end panels are decorated with intricate traceried designs; the ends display cusped quatrefoils, while the sides have cusped Y-tracery. The central panel on the south side prominently features the surname AYLOFFE inscribed in large sideways letters. Sir Joseph Ayloffe was a prominent member of the Society of Antiquaries, and his monument reflects his scholarly interests and achievements.
