Description

The Parish Church of St Mary, located in Hendon, is a Grade II* listed building dating from the mid-13th century. It features a rendered exterior and a slate roof. The church includes a nave, chancel, and a north aisle, along with an early 16th-century north chapel. The original south aisle was replaced by a later nave and south aisle designed by Temple Moore between 1914 and 1915. A small 15th-century ragstone west tower is present, and the east window dates from the early 15th century. Inside, there is a flat-pitched, four-bay timber roof in the nave and north aisle from the 15th century. The font is a notable square design from the 12th century, featuring eight intersecting enriched arcades on each face. The north chapel contains a window by Kempe and an altar screen designed by Bodley. High altar hangings and posts were created by Comper. The church also houses several monuments, including a deeply incised black marble slab for Sir Jeremy Whichcot, who died in 1677, and memorials for William Rawlinson (died 1703), Sir Charles Colmore (1806, by Flaxman), Giles Earle (1811, by Charles Harriott Smith), and Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, who died in 1826.
