Description
The Church of St Alban the Martyr, built around 1932, is a cruciform church designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It is constructed of brown brick with brown stone dressings and russet tiling. The church features an aisleless nave, short north and south transepts, and a chancel. Designed in the Decorated Gothic style, it has a battlemented octagonal tower at the crossing, topped with a pyramidal roof dormer on alternate faces. The tower's tapering corners create an impression of strength, and it is supported by well-shouldered buttresses. There are north and south porches, and a vestry is located on the south side, which includes a staircase turret at the southeast corner. Inside, the church has an impressive plain rendered interior with arches at the crossing and west end. A delicately wrought stone reredos features a central crucifix and canopy work above, and there is an alabaster font at the west end.
