Description
These are a group of artisans' cottages dating from 1908 to 1909, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. They are similar in materials and layout to the cottages at Nos. 17-27 (odd) Temple Fortune Hill, situated opposite. Several details differ, including more pronounced flared eaves to the projecting wings, and a single light inserted into the gable facing of No. 18 in the later 20th century. The interior returns of each wing lack half-dormers and contain three windows each. A narrow, round-arched passageway is located in the main range where it joins the crosswing. There is greater variety in the casement windows, an axial ridge stack at the centre of the building, lateral stacks along the main roof range in line with the crosswings, and a pair of stacks on each crosswing. These cottages form a significant part of Nos. 1-35 (odd) and 2-36 (even) Temple Fortune Hill, representing an important section of the original artisans’ quarter. The design prioritizes a unified streetscape composed of distinct building types, similar to the approach used at Asmuns Hill.
