Description

4-8 Golders Green Road is a bank with flats above, built around 1921 by architects Herbert A. Welch and H. Clifford Hollis. The building features red brick with some tile-hanging and a tiled roof, standing three to four storeys tall on a triangular site in a vernacular revival style.

The south-facing façade has five bays, with ground floor windows that include mullions and transoms, and a central door. A former entrance on the corner has been blocked, replaced by a cash dispenser. There is a continuous fascia with a dentil cornice. The left and right bays have oriel windows that extend to the eaves, with the left side featuring stone mullioned windows. The central bay above the door has an oriel window on the first floor and is tile-hung on the second floor, while the other windows are set back. The building has overhanging eaves and hipped roofs, along with tall chimneystacks.

The canted corner includes a chimney-breast that rises to triple brick stacks, with a matching pair of oriels on the left-hand return, above mullion and transom windows. The Golders Green Crescent frontage continues at a lower height, featuring four bays arranged in pairs, divided by a central recess topped with a tiled roof ridge supported by struts, which leads to the side entrance for the flats below.

The bank interior has been extensively refitted in recent years, while the upper floors were not inspected. This building completes the Cheapside development, part of the Golders Green shopping centre that grew rapidly in the early 20th century. Welch and Hollis, who previously collaborated with Parker and Unwin on Hampstead Garden Suburb, designed this block as a late yet effective example of the vernacular revival style within this significant suburban development.
