Description
This First World War memorial, with later additions commemorating the Second World War, was unveiled in 1924 and is located on the village green at the centre of Finchley Garden Village. The memorial is constructed of Portland stone with a wrought-iron lamp.
The design consists of a Portland stone pedestal, featuring inset engaged columns at the corners and a convex-moulded cornice above an ogee-moulded base. The pedestal is topped by a wrought-iron lamp with scroll feet, displaying Arts and Crafts styling. The lamp’s base features iron uprights rising from scroll feet to a lantern, which is protected by leaded cathedral glass. The lantern itself culminates in a spiky tented cap with small gablets and a ball finial.
The north (front) face of the pedestal is inscribed with the dedication “IN HONOUR OF THE RESIDENTS OF THIS VILLAGE WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1914 – 1918,” followed by the names, ranks, and regiments of those commemorated, and the quotation “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE.” The south side bears a dedication to Frank E. Stratton, the village architect, who died on 6th June 1922. The eastern face includes the words “THIS INSCRIPTION IS ADDED IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES 1939 – 1945,” followed by names, ranks, and regiments (or RAF).
