Description
The chest tomb to Elizabeth Norris is located in the churchyard of St Mary-at-Finchley and dates from around 1779. It is made of Portland stone and features a semi-reclining effigy of a veiled woman who is contemplating an urn. This effigy is placed on a chest that has fielded inscription panels. The tomb is enclosed by original cast-iron railings, which have obelisk finials on the rails and flaming urn terminals on the main posts. The tomb also commemorates her husband, Richard Norris of Hampstead, who died in 1779. This monument is a rare example of an external churchyard monument that includes an effigy.
