Description
The Tomb of Charles Atkin Swan is a funerary monument located in Hendon Cemetery, dedicated to Charles Atkin Swan, who passed away in 1923. The monument is made of Carrara marble, and while the mason is unknown, it is likely of Italian origin. It features a crucifixion scene with a tall cross and the body of Christ, depicted standing on a rocky base. Christ is embraced by a distraught woman with long hair, likely representing Mary Magdalene. Surrounding the base is a rectangular kerb with six gadrooned urns placed at intervals on square bases. The inscription, which is now partially illegible, begins with: "The brave and beloved husband of Veronica Atkin Swan who went to his rest on December 13th 1923 aged 60 years fortified with all the rites of Holy Church. His faith was great, his last thoughts were for others and his last words...". This monument is noted as an exceptionally exuberant example of commercial funerary statuary, which was available from catalogues and imported from Italy, with few pieces achieving such a level of religious intensity or sculptural grace. According to Hugh Meller's survey of London Cemeteries, Swan founded the first hospital in London for members of the Royal Flying Corps.
